Join Penn's Village and Roger Allen, Professor Emeritus of Arabic & Comparative Literature at the University of Pennsylvania, for this talk on The Islamic State.
Dr. Allen's talk will be subdivided into three parts: the first will look at Islamic beliefs and the implications of the religion's history for today's political situation in the West Asian region in particular, but also throughout the world. The second part will consider the heritage of the relationship between the world of Islam and Western civilization, especially in Europe. A final section will consider the political and cultural ramifications of scriptural interpretation and more significantly in this context, misinterpretation.

In June 2011, Roger Allen retired from his position as the Sascha Jane Patterson Harvie Professor of Social Thought and Comparative Ethics in the School of Arts & Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania, where he also served as Professor of Arabic and Comparative Literature in the Department of Near Eastern Languages & Civilizations. In 2008 he was elected President of the Middle East Studies Association of North America (MESA) for the year 2009-2010.

We will meet in the Empowerment Room at the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce (200 S Broad St), 7th Floor at the Mars Drinks Conference Center. This is in The Bellevue and is handicap accessible.

Please register by emailing info@pennsvillage.org or by calling 215-925-7333.There is no charge for Penn’s Village members and volunteers. We would appreciate a $5 donation from other guests. Other guests are welcome to attend three programs before joining and/or volunteering.
